Stepping through the door of the Old Porter Pub in San Vito Dei Normanni, feels like I’ve been transported back to England! The design and attention to detail is incredible and you truly get the feeling of being in a traditional English Pub. Each piece of furniture, painting, stags head and other quintessentially British artefacts have been imported from London, in order to create that perfect old English pub feel. Even the wallpaper has been painted to give the effect of times gone by when smoking was permitted in a pub, and thus rendering the wallpaper a nicotine colour. Back then smoking went hand-in-hand with a pint. Another thing I was drawn to was the open fireplace, perfect for those cosy winter’s evenings. This is something I miss about Blighty during the winter months; venturing out with friends, all huddled round an open fire, exchanging stories and sampling some of the local brew.
But I digress, it’s summertime in Puglia and what you really need is a refreshing beer! At the Old Porter Pub they have an array of excellent British beer on tap; Bombardier, London Stout, Big Job beer to name but a few. They have created a purposely built, climate controlled ‘cellar’ to ensure your beer reaches your glass at the optimum temperature. They also have a large selection of International bottled beers too, all of which are perfect to wash down the traditional British fish and chips. The chef worked and lived in London for 3 years and mastered the art of our traditional beer batter cod, so the fish retains it succulent, light, flaky texture whilst the batter remains crispy and delicious. Other delights on the menu include the enormous Angus beef burger, fresh salmon burger, cheese and salami platters, salads and a small selection of desserts.
However, it’s not all about British beer and fish & chips, they have the largest selection of whiskey I have ever seen! Now, I’m no connoisseur of whiskey but if you are, you’ll have a lot of fun working your way through the various vintages.
In my opinion, the Old Porter would appeal to the more disconcerting clients who appreciate tradition combined with a touch of class. Offering great British food, in an English setting, in the heart of the old town of San Vito Dei Normanni. Quality and attention to detail are what you will find in the Old Porter Pub. So, why not pop in for a pint and sample their take on some of our favourite British meals.
