Puglian Pleasures

Vox Popvli may not sound like your typical Puglian restaurant but that’s because it isn’t. Owners Stefano Suma and Pia Urso (husband and wife) have travelled the world, experiencing an array of culinary delights, other continents have to offer. They have hand picked some of their favourite ingredients from around the world, and with the help of their creative chef, Giuseppe Dovizioso, they have carefully and subtly blended traditional Pugliese cuisine with hints of the Far East and Mediterranean countries, making Vox Popvli an intriguing and pleasantly surprising place to dine.

For these reasons, I thought it would be perfect for my next Puglian Pleasures ‘Food and wine event’. And I have to say, the guests were not disappointed. Within a matter of days of publicising the event, it had sold out! Last minute cancellations only meant that those on the reserve list could come along after all! Working in collaboration with Vox Popvli was an absolute pleasure, the Chef was keen to share his ideas on what food would work best with our chosen winery; Schiena Vini, who was showcasing four fabulous reds; I Tre Compari – Primitivo, Enneoro – Negroamaro, Messapico – Salice Salentino and Impero – Primitivo di Manduria DOC. With these reds in mind and the thought-provoking menu, the title of the event was born; ‘Rosso Velluto’ Red Velvet! Very appropriate for an evening of sumptuous food and silky smooth reds!

Our sommelier, Angelo Laveneziana, introduced the first red, then came the grand surprise! The powerful voice of Alessandro Arena which was perfectly balanced against the stone walls and star vaulted ceiling of the restaurant, complimented the strong characteristic of the Primitivo wine which was served with the antipasto. The evening continued in this manner and as the wine flowed, Angelo struggled to grab the attention of the guests to explain the preceding red. Although I wasn’t too flustered by this reaction, as it just meant that the guests were thoroughly enjoying the evening.

So, where is this fabulous restaurant hidden, I hear you cry? It’s located on the outskirts of the beautiful white city of Ceglie Messapica. If you’re in Puglia and want to escape the tourist spots, head to Ceglie and Vox Popvli and discover this culinary delight.
